Grand Jury Email Summons May Harm Your Computer

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is alerting computer users about a spam email that contains a fraudulent court subpoena. The bogus email attempts to notify recipients that they are commanded to appear and testify before a Grand Jury.

At first glance, the email appears authentic. It contains a court case number, federal code, name and address of a California federal court, court room number, issuing officers' names, and the court's seal. The spammer directs recipients to click the link provided in the email in order to download and print associated information for their records. If the recipient clicks the link, a malicious code is downloaded onto their computer.

The email also contains language threatening recipients with contempt of court charges if they fail to appear. Recipients are told the subpoena will remain in effect until the court grants a release. As with most spam, the content contains multiple spelling errors.

If you receive this type of notification and are unsure of its authenticity, you should contact the issuing court clerk's office for validation. Subpoenas are generally served in person, by mail or fax, not by email.

"Computer based scams and fraudulent activities are rampant on the internet these days," said James E. Finch, Assistant Director of the FBI's Cyber Division. "People should delete unsolicited email, especially from an unknown sender. If you accidentally open the email, do not click any embedded links, as they may contain a virus or malware which will harm your computer."

The IC3 was established as a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). It serves as the central reporting point and referral agency for Internet related criminal complaints.

ATM Safety Tips

  1. Try to avoid using an automatic teller machine when alone. Take someone with you or only use an ATM when others are around.
  2. If possible, avoid using an ATM after dark. If you must, choose one that is well lit and does not have tall bushes nearby or other easy hiding places for a thief.
  3. When you arrive at an ATM, look around. If you see anything that makes you uncomfortable or anyone who looks suspicious, do not stop. Go to a different ATM or come back later. Notify police.
  4. Have your access card and any other documents you need ready when you approach an ATM. While you are fumbling with a wallet or purse, you are easy prey for a thief.
  5. If someone else is using the ATM, stay alert to your surroundings. Look up and around every few seconds while transacting your business.
  6. Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Do not enter your PIN if anyone else can see the screen or keypad. Use your body to shield your PIN from onlookers. Don't give your PIN out to others. This is the leading cause of theft.
  7. When your transaction is finished, be sure you have your card and your receipt, then leave immediately. Avoid counting or otherwise displaying large amounts of cash.
  8. As you leave, be aware of anything suspicious. If you think you are being followed, go to an area with a lot of people and call the police.
